Police Department
Mission Statement
It is the mission of the Columbus Police Department to protect and serve the Columbus community, to safeguard the life and property of its citizens, and to reduce the fear of crime and enhance the quality of life for all citizens. The Department will serve all citizens with dignity and respect regardless of race, creed, color, religion, or socioeconomic status.
We envision the enhancement of the quality of life in Columbus through effective, efficient, and proactive policing partnerships and dedicated service to our community
Each officer of the Columbus Police Department is expected to display a positive and professional image that is representative of our creed IMAGE:

We will achieve our mission by focusing on these objectives: Efficiency, Effectiveness, Proactive policing, and striving to reach our goals.
- To be committed to treating all citizens with dignity and respect when responding to a call for service or enforcing the law.
- To respond to all calls for service in a professional and timely manner, as well as trying to meet or exceed the citizens' expectations as it relates to their calls for service.
- To hire the best trained professional officers, while giving them the best updated and advanced training in the law enforcement field.
- To utilize members of the community in volunteer positions that will help the department become more effective and efficient in providing service to the community while strengthening community support and rapport.
- To be transparent with our police authority. Our role is to enforce the law in a fair and impartial manner; we recognize both the statutory and judicial limitations of our power and the constitutional rights of our citizens and will strive to keep that balance - as stated by Sir Robert Peel in 1829, in his Nine Peelian Principles.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice's Community Oriented Services, community policing is a philosophy that promotes organizational strategies that support the systematic use of partnerships and problem-solving techniques to proactively address the immediate conditions that give rise to public safety issues such as crime, social disorder, and fear of crime. Relevant aspects are as follows:
- C.P.D. Community Partnerships - Collaborative partnerships between the Columbus Police Department and the individuals and organizations they serve to develop solutions to problems and increase trust in the police department.
- C.P.D. Organizational Transformation - The alignment of police department organizational management, structure, personnel, and information systems to support the adoption of community partnerships and proactive problem-solving in the city of Columbus.
- Problem Solving - The process of engaging in the proactive and systematic examination of identified problems unique to the city of Columbus to develop and evaluate effective responses by the Columbus Police Department.
Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant
As of July 6, 2020, the Columbus Mississippi Forensic Lab intends to use its allotment of the Edward Byrne Memorial 2020 JAG funding to purchase and install new testing and safety equipment for the controlled substance testing lab.
Coronavirus Emergency Supplemental Funding Program Fiscal Year 2020
As of April 6, 2020, the Columbus Police Department (C.P.D.) intends to use its allotment of the Coronavirus Emergency Funding Program Fiscal Year 2020 to purchase mobile purifiers, office air cubes, surface/air disinfectants, and 2 drones equipped with cameras to assist the City of Columbus in preventing, preparing for and responding to the Coronavirus.
